What is Dance4Asthma?

Rich Text

Dance4Asthma has been running every year since 2012

Dance4Asthma is a fun and energetic way to raise awareness of asthma in schools. Dancing is a great way to express creativity while helping you keep active and fit. Dancing is also a way to bring people together by grabbing your friends and making up your own dance routine, whether it's ballet or hiphop!

In New Zealand, 1 in 7 kids takes medication for asthma, and 550,000 school days are lost each year because of this. Entering school with asthma can be quite hard on some children - you may even have friends in your class who face these challenges every day.

Sounds great! How can my school get involved?

Throughout May and June, schools are encouraged to put together a dance video to the 2016 Dance4Asthma song 'Team' by Lorde and post it on YouTube. All schools are welcome to enter, and the video can involve one class or the whole school - be as creative as you want!

Talk to the principal or teachers at your school and ask your friends and classmates to join in! If you register early we can help you get started by sending a FREE Dance4Asthma pack.

There are lots of other ways you can show support for those with asthma too - including fundraising. You could hold a school disco and charge a gold coin entry to collect for donations, or hold a dance-a-thon (like a marathon but with dancing) where you could ask people to sponsor you for every 5 minutes of dancing you do!

There are also great prizes up for grabs - don't miss out!

After entries close in June, the judges will pick a winning video from each category who will receive a $1,000 cash prize. Whether your school needs new books, supplies, technology or sporting equipment we hope this prize will make a positive impact on your students. Categories are:

  • Primary school
  • Intermediate school
  • Secondary school

Not only will you help raise awareness and joing a good cause, but you can give something back to your school as well.  Keep an eye out here for announcements on judging and prizes throughout Term 2, and good luck!
